Mama‘s been a code’n

Posted on February 27, 2023March 1, 2023 by Julia

You can’t miss it as you navigate my website to this blog. It is all festooned with my book stuff!

Yes, my novel Pardon my Camino is out and available!

Such a strange sensation, after all these years of writing, sending out queries, then becoming indie and all the self-publishing angst, the book just seems to have appeared, to have sprung forth. A bit like childbirth, you end up with a lovely baby, and somehow all that sweat, swearing and pain is just a hazy memory.

I got my paperback author proof copy from Amazon Kindle who recommended a final paper read to check it out. There were indeed some spacing and punctuation that needed fixing. I was worried that these changes could upset the professional formatting, but it was just tweaks, no structural changes, and all went well.  Then I turned to the eBook version. I thought this would be easy-peasy as the formatting is not such a big deal for an eBook as people adjust the font size on their devices to best suit their eyes.  The eBook was in EPub version, and then the fun began as the only way to edit it at this stage was to make the changes in the code!

Oh heavens above, glory me, code, no!  I thought I would have to leave it as is without corrections. This was most distressing.  After a night of insomnia and thinking, I felt that I could give this a try. Just small corrections, surely I could master those.  I Googled ‘simple HTML code’ and found a friendly site with instructions and exercises.  And I took on the eBook corrections and it worked!

I am so proud and what a lesson: to plough on, learn and do.  Not only proud, I felt empowered. I know it was just modest code, but I did it.  And I reloaded the new versions and pressed Publish……

Now, beyond the chatting up and talking, I must tackle the promotion in a more sustained way: e-mails, Camino community, and then there is that Facebook ad I need to adjust (more software sighs..)

Pardon my Camino has so much: The Camino trail of course and all that is involved with backpacks, hostels and blisters plus plus, there are family and couple dynamics and a big financial hiccup, there are adventures, friends and friendship, spirituality, history, a gay romantic sub-plot, church, sex, food and wine, all woven around the themes of truth and forgiveness.  I am told it is a great draw-you-along-read. Don’t forget it’s fiction, this is not my life and mishaps and adventures.

I do hope you will read it, Kindle Amazon for paperback and eBook, Kobo for eBook.
Amazon.ca or the Amazon of your country. Kobo.com
See if your local library will bring it in or order from your bookstore, they should be able to get it in.

(The ISBN number is a good locating device for bookstores and libraries)
