We are just over a long weekend and I am bushed, all in, done for, whacked and knackered (which always sounds like a rude word to me but apparently is not.) I also feel that a vast amount of time has been consumed since Friday evening, as though I had been away on a trip to afar, which I was not.
However, it was not just any old long weekend, it is called a Civic Weekend and this is the time for the annual Regatta at Seba Beach Summer Village where we have our cottage. Regatta is a name which resonates beautifully for me evoking a schedule of sailing yacht races, drinks on the yacht club veranda and strong young men, well people, hair matted with salt water – well our regatta proudly does have a sail dingy race and a sail-by when people decorate their boats as pirate ships, desert islands, Viking longboats. Such fun!
Added to this there are fireworks – spectacular, sandcastle building competition, kiddie races, bridge-on –the-beach tournament, water ski competition, adult dance. For us, the feature event is the parade which gathers and starts right in front of our cottage. People have such clever ideas for themes – there was much pink this year in honour of Barbie, floats promoting good environmental practices for the lake, kiddies with decorated bikes and doggies, the library reading club, the walking group, the Shriners, Ghost Busters and more.
The whole village is heaving with people that weekend. Amazing to think this little square acre of rolling parkland is just a dense crowd of folk playing, eating and a bit of sleeping and drinking on this first weekend of August. And we do our part. This year we had lovely friends rotating through. They all helped and brought. Much food, some drink, and so many dishes to wash – no mechanical dishwasher at our basic cottage. Sleeping places all over.
I think I am exhausted by just keeping everything happily moving forward, dashing from event to event, swimming in the lake with and without grandkids, we got out the canoe and I sailed my little sailboat – yeah!
By the time Tony and I made it back to the city on Monday evening, we were drained shadows of our former selves. All we could manage was a frozen pizza (well, cooked by then) in front of the TV.
Now I am just working through the mountain of washing including swim gear and towels that smells quite strongly of weeds from the lake.
I wanted to thank you for this very good read!! I definitely loved every little bit of it. I have you bookmarked to check out new things you postÖ
Great article. I will be experiencing many of these issues as well..
